Dr. Gangi received a B.A. in Chemistry from New York University in 1966 and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry also from New York University three years later. His research involved theoretical calculations on the electronic structure and spectrum of nitrogen dioxide. During this time he received the Merck and Company Award, 1966; a National Defense Education Act Title IV Fellowship, 1967-1969; a Teaching Fellowship, 1966-1967; and the NYU Founders' Day Award for outstanding academic achievement, 1970. A two-year post-doctoral appointment at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario followed during which time he investigated the singlet and triplet species of small molecules. He then returned to New York University as Assistant Professor, and in 1972 joined the faculty of Gloucester County College where he now holds the rank of Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Computer Science. From 1977-1981 he served as the administrator of the College's Educational Computer Services, was the Chair of the Mathematics, Science and Technology Division from 1987 to 1989, and, in 1987, established the Annual Gloucester County High School Computer Programming Contest which recently held its 17th event. During the 1999-2000 college year Dr. Gangi took a break from full-time teaching in order to chair the 65-member Technology Planning Committee. Over the years he has designed three major academic programs: Chemical Engineering Technology (1972), Chemical Engineering Technology - Environmental Option (1980), and Computer Science (1984). In 1979 he co-directed a National Science Foundation Student Science Training Program at what is now Rowan University. He is also a member of their adjunct faculty. Mobil Research and Development Corporation commissioned him in 1991 to write and produce a series of 18 one-half hour training videotapes, Laboratory Techniques: Basic Science for Technicians. This was completed in 1993. Dr. Gangi has written several major publications including a chapter in a book, Theoretical Chemistry, Volume 2, The Chemical Society, London (1975), and a manual, Laboratory Exercises in General Chemistry, McGraw-Hill (1997); two other manuals await publication. His students can access his on-line Lecture Notes for General Chemistry from this site. In 2007 Dr. Gangi received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. |
