Q. Everyone says that chemistry classes are very tough. Is this true?
A.
Chemistry courses are demanding but not tough. By this I mean that you will have to devote adequate time to study and do homework in order to succeed. The general rule of thumb is that two hours of study/homework time is needed every week for each course credit. Since chemistry courses carry four credits each, it is expected that you spend about eight hours a week studying.

Q. I'm planning on transferring my classes to a four-year school. Are the chemistry classes at GCC comparable to those at other colleges?
A.
My chemistry courses at GCC are comparable to those in other colleges and universities around the country. Although no college can guarantee what courses another college will accept, I know of no case where credit for the chemistry classes described on these web pages were not accepted as credit for a comparable course at another institution -- and that covers 32 years!

Q. I understand that you give daily quizzes. Are these difficult?
A.
The daily quizzes are comprised of from 1 to 3 multiple-choice questions based on the homework assigned for that day. Students tell me that after a while they get used to the process, and many have said they were grateful that the quizzes encouraged them to keep up with the course material instead of cramming before exams (which is very unsuccessful in chemistry).

Q. How much math will I be doing in chemistry class?
A.
General chemistry requires proficiency in simple algebra. Anyone who has successfully completed a high school algebra course has had enough math to succeed in general chemistry. The math demands in organic chemistry are even less.

Q. Tell me something about the exams.
A.
There are usually three or four exams given during the course. They are all of equal weight in determining your course grade. Each exam covers a group of chapters in your text. All the material in these assigned chapters as well as the material presented in class may be included in these exams. Questions on the exams are of the multiple choice type. The exams usually take from one to one-and-a-half hours; most students finish well before this time.

Q. I have a question that's not shown here. Where might I find the answer?
